Meta will remove end-to-end encryption from messages on Instagram globally, arguing that most users weren't using it. The change will take effect on May 8.
Instagram messages will no longer be entirely private, as Meta is removing end-to-end encryption from the app's chats worldwide . The measure was announced a few weeks ago and will take effect this Friday, May 8 .
According to The Guardian , the company argued that it made this decision because the vast majority of users did not use that setting , despite it being the most private form of online messaging.
“ Very few people were opting for end-to-end encryption in direct messages, so we will be removing this option from Instagram in the coming months,” a spokesperson told the media outlet last March.
“Anyone who wants to continue using end-to-end encryption can easily do so on WhatsApp,” he added.
On WhatsApp, this privacy setting is enabled by default, while on Instagram it had to be activated manually , which is why many users did not use it.
What will happen to Instagram messages?
Let's remember that end-to-end encryption, technically known as E2EE, is a security system that ensures that only the sender and receiver of messages in the chat can read them and access the photos or files sent.
This privacy measure was first implemented by WhatsApp between 2014 and 2016 and prevents even Meta from accessing messages.
However, it received criticism, especially from governments and security agencies, as it hinders lawful surveillance and the fight against crime .
Now, removing encryption means your messages will still be there, but Meta will be able to access them if needed .
For the time being, the measure will not be removed from other social networks.
