Dolls that imitate newborns can cost over R$3,000. In Goiás, a couple put together their own layette and even a social media profile for their baby.
Reborn dolls are hyper-realistic dolls handcrafted to mimic newborns, and their prices can reach over R$ 3,000.
In Rio de Janeiro, city councilors approved "Reborn Stork Day" on May 7th, in honor of the artisans who create reborn dolls. If the project receives approval from Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD), the date will be celebrated on September 4th.
"The art of Reborn Stork dolls has also been used in several countries as a way to remember a young child or a baby who did not survive," the project text mentioned.
Speaking to g1 , psychoanalyst Maysa Balduíno pointed out that it is difficult to explain the condition of mothers of reborn dolls and that each case must be analyzed individually. She said that there are therapeutic approaches that use the dolls to deal with bereaved patients.
“When I hear news about reborn babies, I get the impression that, for some people, it must be a relief: a lifeless baby, but extremely alive for someone who feels like a mother. A more playful condition than that of a mother of a mortal human baby,” she pointed out.
Understand the dispute
In the video, published on Monday (12), lawyer Suzana Ferreira, a specialist in digital law, said that she assisted a woman who claimed to have formed a family, in which the reborn baby was part of it. After the end of the relationship, the ex-partner insisted on keeping the doll.
The "mother" mentioned that another doll wouldn't solve the problem due to the emotional attachment. The woman also said she would find it fair if the costs of buying the doll were split, in addition to the amount spent on the layette they both bought for the baby.
Speaking to g1 , Suzana said she refused the case because "it's not possible to regulate the custody of a doll." However, the lawyer stated that she only offered to help the woman in the dispute over the administration of the baby's social media account , which is generating monetization and advertising revenue.
Increase in sales
Viral popularity of reborn dolls has increased sales, says businesswoman — Photo: Reproduction/Arte Ryka
In an interview with TV Anhanguera, Reylla Campos, partner of the Arte Ryka store in Goiânia, a brand specializing in hyper-realistic babies, whose headquarters are in the city of Rio Verde , highlighted that there has been an increase in sales due to the viral spread of reborn dolls on social media.
"Adults who were apprehensive, but with this viral spread, they saw that it's not just children who like babies [...] because it's a work of art," said the businesswoman.
The hyper-realistic babies she sells in her store range in price from R$1,850 to R$2,000. "These are handmade babies, so there's a lot of manual work involved, with 'veins,' cold spots, and 'creases,'" she explained. Reylla emphasized that it's meticulous work.
In addition to the doll, the buyer receives a "complete first care experience ," including a baby bottle with fake milk, a pacifier, a hairbrush, leave-in conditioner, and a diaper.
