Meta will analyze the bone structure of users in their posts to determine their age.

If the structure of your profile matches that of a person under 13 years old, Meta will take this into account, along with the rest of the analysis of the "general themes and visual cues" of your posts.

Meta is implementing a new way to detect users under 13 years old on its Instagram and Facebook social networks, by analyzing bone structure through artificial intelligence (AI).

With the aim of further strengthening control measures for minors using its platforms, especially those under 13, the company led by Mark Zuckerberg has extended to the European Union (EU) the AI system that detects profiles of teenagers, even if they claim to be adults.

This system determines the user's age by analyzing the context of the profile, such as birthday celebrations or mentions of school reports, in addition to incorporating visual analysis in photos and videos to identify clues that might go unnoticed based solely on text.

However, Meta intends to go further and, within visual analysis, is implementing a new way to detect users under 13 years old on Instagram and Facebook, specifically analyzing the bone structure and height of people appearing in the account's posts.

"Our AI relies on general characteristics and visual cues, such as height or bone structure, to estimate a person's approximate age," the company explained in a blog post, noting that this measure began to be implemented in selected countries, including the United States, before its general rollout.

Meta emphasized, however, that this is not a "facial recognition" analysis system, since "it does not identify the specific person in the image."

Instead, it focuses on bone structure, that is, the person's physical size and height.

If the structure of your profile matches that of a person under 13 years old, Meta will take this into account, along with the rest of the analysis of the "general themes and visual cues" of your posts, to determine if you are ultimately a minor who cannot use its services and disable your account or adapt it to your needs.
